Book Review
Three Proven Diet Wisdoms for Losing Weight, Gaining Energy, and Reversing Chronic Disease
by Tom Ballard, RN, ND
Healthy nutrition doesn't have to be difficult or complicated. Nutrition-1-2-3 by Tom Ballard, RN, ND, shares the science and a historical perspective on what he refers to as "The Three Wisdoms" of healthy eating.
The book is geared toward patients, is presented in an easy-to-read format free ofhype and diet fads, and includes many excerpts from Ballard's own patients while ontheir journey to healthier eating.
Nutrition-1-2-3 is divided into nine sections beginning with an introduction or"Appetizer" section focusing on the history of nutrition and the value of the "ancestraldiet."
Ballard also presents the pitfalls and dangers of our modern diet and toxicenvironment, including the use of pesticides, fertilizers, processing, and additives in our food supply. This section is followed by some basic nutritional information on the roleof carbohydrates, fat, protein, micro nutrients, and water in maintaining a healthy body.
The "Main Course" section of the book outlines The Three Wisdoms:
· Regularity- timing of meals
· Variety - variation in the type of foods
consumed
· Wholeness - choosing fresh, organic, minimally
processed foods
This section and the one following also show how to bring all three wisdoms togetherand how to apply them to shopping, cooking, and restaurant eating on a day-to-daybasis.
The book also addresses the role of food choices and lifestyle in many common disease states and conditions, such
as aging, weight issues, immune dysfunction, cancer, heart disease, asthma and allergy, diabetes, and poor digestion. He presents information on how to "turn to the plate and not the prescription pad," using nutrition and not medications to deal with health issues.
The final sections includes "Aperitifs" on nutritional supplement use, finding the right doctor, and tips on staying focused, as well as "Little Nibbles" of information and charts on body mass index, waist-to-hip ratios, food protein content, and reading food labels.
This book is a great guide for anyone tired of fad diets and misinformation from the food industry, and for those who seek help with basic nutrition and the application of diet to chronic disease. It is an easy guide for people who want to make food an ally in their quest for a healthier lifestyle.
